CLUB History

Coral Ridge Country Club was founded in 1954 by golf’s most innovative architect Robert Trent Jones,Sr., and his wife, Ione. The land that the Club now stands on started with the construction of the Florananda course which began in the 1920’s but was halted when the crash in 1929 forced the board members to give it up. In 1954, Mr. Jones saw an opportunity in the unfinished course and looked forward to molding the land to his intricate specifications.

Construction for Coral Ridge Country Club began in September of 1954 and the club was soon opened in February of 1955 with Mr. Jones as President. He had a vision of a true, traditional private club with a challenging, championship course. At first, the club started with only a golf course and shop, but Mr. Jones had a much bigger vision. In the early 1960’s the Jones’ vastly improved the club with the construction of the clubhouse, tennis courts, and Olympic size swimming pool. Mrs. Jones initially set the tone at Coral Ridge with her sense of graciousness and warmth.

Her ability to create a “home away from home” for the members of Coral Ridge made her a favorite with everyone. This Jones family faithfully continued this tradition and many others. Robert and Ione’s sons, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Rees L. Jones, followed in their parent’s footsteps and have always been involved in the management of the club. Over the years, the classic Robert Trent Jones golf course has remained the core of the club drawing accomplished players and beginners alike. However, the clubhouse has expanded over the years to accommodate an increasingly active membership.

In 1994, the terrace area was added to the clubhouse, affording members the opportunity to enjoy casual dining with picturesque views of the golf course. The formal and casual dining areas serve as an inviting backdrop for a variety of social functions that have continued over the years such as wedding receptions, gala parties, and more serious gatherings. Since its origin, the club has been home to distinguished national and local leaders as well as families from the neighboring communities, with facilities and programs for all ages and continues to be one of the finest private clubs in the area.
